![]() The Cruthers Enjoy The Good Life In PA by Staci Matthes Shirley Cruthers regularly enjoys a social hour complete with appetizers, wine and piano music, lunching with friends at a new restaurant every week, and frequent card and dinner parties - and she's not even on vacation. She and her husband, Evan, are retired and live at Park View Villas Retirement Community in Port Angeles. About a year and half ago, the Cruthers sold their house in Port Angeles and rented a one bedroom apartment at Park View Villas. With its beautifully landscaped grounds, full activity schedule and wide-range of services they could choose from, Park View was a perfect fit. "It's a very welcoming atmosphere," Cruthers said, "and that starts with the staff." Cruthers says their apartment, which is just under 600 square feet and complete with a full kitchen and patio, is ideal considering all of the amenities offered. The pair is served lunch and dinner daily, have their apartment cleaned once a week, and have access to Park View's private dining room where they regularly host parties and card games. "They make it very easy for us to entertain," said Cruthers, who says she and Evan both like being active in the community through their church and bridge groups. The couple reserves the private dining room at least three or four times a month for various get-togethers with friends and family. Every Thursday, the couple, along with many of the friends they've made at Park View, are shuttled to a new restaurant for lunch. Cruthers says she has been to various restaurants on the peninsula between Clallam Bay and Port Angeles. Plus, every Friday afternoon, there's a social hour at the Fireside Room, Cruthers said, during which appetizers and wine are served while someone plays the piano. "People dance or just talk," she said. The retirement lifestyle that the Cruthers enjoy gives them the opportunity to stay active, but also allows them to relax while others do their cooking, cleaning and gardening - almost as if they were actually on vacation. "We felt right from the beginning it was a good value," she said. The Cruthers, who have been married for 30 years, moved to Port Angeles eight years ago from Hawaii. She is a retired administrator for a not-for-profit organization, and he is a retired architect. Port Angeles and Park View, Cruthers said, have been a good choice. "It's a very friendly, welcoming community," she said. "We enjoy the symphony and community theater opportunities." The couple has five children and four grandchildren scattered in various cities and states, but has not been tempted to move away even if that means being closer to them. Port Angeles and Park View just feel right. "We personally like the weather, too," she said. "We're from Hawaii and that says a lot that we like the weather." |
