Grandview Village celebrated all things Norway for our monthly cultural celebration. We learned, explored, tasted, and heard personal stories about the people of Norway and their traditions. We also visited Uff Da Shoppe in Stanwood, where we enjoyed books, photos, and videos of the beautiful landscapes and farms that make up the region.
Grandview resident, Margie Sorlie, sat down with us to share some of her treasures. She has been working on her Bunad, or traditional dress, and shares the beautiful beadwork and intricacies associated with it. An embroidered apron, and Solje, or Norwegian jewelry, a traditional Krumkake Iron, and a Tine box, or hand-bent wooden container and lid, are just some of the priceless heirlooms she shared. We also learned about how a patronymic name is chosen. It is more than just identification, and crucial for establishing direct lineage and preservation of family heritage. She shared about the important religious holidays of Norway and how they were observed.
Volunteer, Denise Bixel, demonstrated how the Krumkake, or rolled cookie, and Lefse, a potato flat bread, is made. Residents also enjoyed taste testing and discussing the differences. Mike, our dining director, made Lingonberry Jam, and prepared a special stew inspired by Norwegian cuisine for the staff and residents to enjoy.
Thank you to our staff and residents, Margie, Denise, and Mike, for leading us in festivities and sharing this beautiful culture!
