These sweethearts at Village Concepts of Marysville, Grandview Village, met in junior high, but did not start dating until after Carl graduated high school. They were married in Edmonds, WA on August 19th, 1960. While only living at Grandview Village for just 4 years, they will celebrate a 65-year wedding anniversary this summer.
Carl and Joy were blessed with three children; a son, and twin girls. They now have seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
When the couple were asked how they managed? Joy replied, “As a family; we did everything as a family.”
They typically packed up the trailer, their five dirt bikes, and the kids, and headed to Gold Bar for some exploration and riding the trails. Most weekends were spent camping, riding, and hunting outdoors while playing together as a family.
Carl served in the army as a pole climber before going to work as an inspector at Boeing in Renton and Everett. Joy worked raising her children, and then in the mail order department of Eddie Bauer.
“Save the money,” says Carl. This is how they were able to afford the playtime; the home in Marysville, WA and Parker, AZ near the Colorado River, the motorhomes and trailers.
“After raising kids and retirement, we were blessed to play for 27 years,” says Joy with a smile. The two lovebirds were snowbirds as well.
We asked the seasoned couple if they had any advice for young people today; how had they been so successful in their marriage? Joy replied, “Be honest, open, and patient,” while Carl said, “Keep it light.”
We want to wish our special couple a Happy Valentine’s Day and thank you for the reminder to find time to play and remember the joys in life.
